Painter, Printmaker, Writer and Teacher
Leicester in 1913, where he attended the college of art 1931-34. He then attended the royal college of art 1934-37 under Eric Ravilious and John Nash. After war service in the RAF, he taught at Birmingham College of Art 1937, then Bristol College of Art 1938-41. He then became principal of Colchester School of Art from 1948 to 1964.
His own written and illustrated books include ”Canals, Barges and People” (1950), “Landscape Painting” (1967), “The Technique of Wood Engraving” (1971), and others. He is a member and past president of the Royal Watercolour Society, and a regular exhibitor at The Royal Academy.
Works in public collections include: The Arts Council, Tate Gallery and the Bristol Museum. He now resides in Scotland.
